All quality entries, although it would’ve been nice to see some diversity in the selection you chose from. IMO
12 out of 20 are built on the same design:
splashy header, with lots of color/flowers, objects.
all those 12 seem like copycats.
Anthony, I’m highlighting a specific design style that has been emerging over the past year. Thanks for your comment.
andiszek, a few of the sites listed are high traffic sites that started the trend. There are a lot of designers using these sites for inspiration in their own work. Thus the spread of Hyperdesignitis (read post above).
I have made a few like these myself. Trying for a completely new look with my deskofken site now. I started it and decided it needs to be more appealing. Some of those blogs you showed, I visit regularly. It is fairly easy to make these types of sites though. Once you get your main image, it’s just changing some classes. Web designer magazine #149 has a complete how to guide on it.
Colorful! – I love boompa it is very unique and well designed
So you’re saying that if I use a big illustrative background I too can have an “outrageous” website?
I agree with anthony cousins. The website’s are all really great but they all look not very different.
Hi Russ readers posters website design fans one n’all yes your right on the money with your overview on this website topic … Ive just put a Squidoo page together and as soon as id finished I looked around other lenses noticing how cool some are some ain’t …
Same goes for my own website designs I no if I spent the rest of my days adding this deleting that another persons site would outshine my websites designs but guess what thats not the name of the websites game its content content then keywords rich then last but not least its the magnets you have in place to attract the right kind of buying traffic … huh … WARNING! Great blog enjoyed my visit many thanks

Nice List!
Can I also consider my site with that one?
Mine was based on a theme I made for myself a year ago.
Now I know the symptoms and disease.
Nice list, and no Hyperdesignitis or seizures (yet)

Hey there, thanks for the feature, Hyperdesign is an interesting concept, made me smile
A blog usually has a header, post column, sidebar column and footer, there are only a couple of ways to decorate them if you want to keep a classic blog structure.
The majority of the sites featured here are blogs or based on blog engines. I don’t think it’s wrong to stick to the classic structure of a blog sometimes, people tend to get confused if you move your footer to the top of the page and put your sidebar in the footer
Anyways, kudos to everybody!

I agree that they all look exactly the same to me. Copycat.

I appreciate your inclusion of Tutorial9 in the mix here.
I understand the argument for many of the sites having similar structure, following similar conventions, and even sharing similar styles&emdash;but does that really surprise anyone?
Truly, if you’re one to break conventions online you won’t keep a user around long enough to really use the site. Structures of websites aren’t a whole lot different than a magazine or newspaper. You’re not a better publisher if you provide your content in a container no one is used too. It really comes down to the material itself and how easy it is for the users to parse.
And to settle similar styles, most of these are design websites. Why shouldn’t they appeal to the creative audience with illustrative elements?
I like these designs for their creativity and have been to at least half of them.
This hyperdesign is definitely an emerging and uprising style but seriously there is so much going on in each of them.
Some are tactful and have a sense of flow to them but some of them are over done.
How does one even decide that “Hey I should keep adding more, or wait I’d added enough eye candy, time to develop content.”?
I don’t consider these good design. It’s raucous, obtrusive, distracting. And they do all look oddly similar. Not impressed.
Yeah, and that Sistene Chapel too. Outrageous!
